Japhet Creek
Japhet Creek, the first Houston Green Fingers project, is an initiative to form parks along bayous and creeks that feed into Buffalo Bayou. Japhet Creek is an example of how the creation of corridors of connectivity to the bayou system can improve both water quality and the relation of community to the environment. The Japhet Creek Community Association has volunteered countless hours to restore the native environment and rescue it from neglect and abuse.
Dis(solve): a celebration
Dis(solve) is a campaign that celebrates, promotes and educates the public about Japhet Creek. In a collaborative effort, teams from the University of Houston Graphic Communications Program and the College of Architecture created a series of environmental installations to enhance, inform and celebrate Japhet Creek Park. The celebration will include food and music.
The objective of the work is to inform the public about Japhet Creek/Green Fingers specifically, but also serve as environmental metaphor about ideas and issues that shape our thoughts about nature, water, industry, protection and people. Each piece will function in a semi-permanent manner to merge structure, nature, and environmental impact with regard to Japhet Creek. Going beyond the notion of doing no harm, these statement pieces will examine the things we make as humans and their ability to return back to nature.
