The University of Houston School of Art and the Graphic Communications Program lost one of its most colorful characters and beloved faculty with the passing of David Hickman. David was known by all for his love of color; especially purple. Proof can be found in New Ulm, Texas where his home and gallery are bathed in the rich hue. Indeed color pervaded not only his home and furniture but also his fanciful paintings and vibrant attire. David’s passion for color was a reflection of his passion for life, which he enthusiastically shared with his many adoring students at the University of Houston where he began teaching in 1969. His courses in illustration, color and watercolor were always popular. Students will no doubt remember Mr. Hickman for immersing them in a magical world of color. One former student’s reflection upon hearing of David’s passing underscores the feelings of many: "This is really sad to hear… such a loss for future students. I still remember those nights of mixing paints for my color wheel or trying to get just the right shades of grey. I have such an appreciation for color because of him." The School of Art has lost value and intensity with the loss of David Hickman.
